Why we should teach our kids the F word….

We're not talking about that f-word, of course.

We’re no parenting experts, but we’re pretty sure that’s bad...

The f-word we’re talking about is Flexitarianism.

Another faddy-buzzword?

A form of exercise for especially bendy-people?

Nope. Think again.

Flexitarianism is one of the fastest growing dietary choices in the UK.

Recent YouGov research suggests that 14% of the population have embraced the flexitarian diet, which aims to reduce meat and dairy intake, without eliminating it completely.

Flexitarian’s sit somewhere between vegetarians and full-on meat eaters, with a primarily plant-based diet with small quantities of high-quality meat as part of a properly balanced diet. The key really is in the name – the ‘flex’ being the flexibility that it allows us to have.

For some that might mean eating meat and animal products only on special occasions, and for others having regular meat and dairy-free days throughout the week. There are no specific rules or ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach; but if we all embraced its ethos, the impact could be transformative.

Flexitarianism is so much more than just a buzzword.

It’s about making informed food choices; and putting health, sustainability, and environmental impact high on the food-agenda - something that benefits not only us, but the world our children will inherit.

In a society that’s rapidly becoming more conscious of the environmental implications of meat production and consumption, as well as the ethics involved in the rearing and treatment of farmed animals, flexitarianism gives us the opportunity to vote for change with our stomachs by making small adjustments to the meals we eat. A study published in the Lancetin 2019 called for dramatic changes in food production and the human diet, in order to avoid “catastrophic damage to the planet.”

One of its recommendations was to reduce red meat consumption by 50% and double our intake of fruit, nuts and vegetables – a small step that we can all take to ensure the future health of our planet for generations to come.

Fortunately, veggie-centric, ethically sourced food just so happens to be both delicious and our speciality…
